America, fuck yeah [Nov. 2nd, 2010|10:44 pm]
With the mid-term elections going on, I can't help but give my point of view. I'm european, so I believe I have a bit of a less biased view upon the politics of America than some who are smack dead in the middle do.

I've been following some of the campaigning going on and I can only say that I'm severely dissapointed in how your news, your media handles it all. I've seen some very bad people, make some very untrue statements (read: lies), and they just managed to do that without them being corrected, without anyone in the media calling them out on it.

It's a shame that I have to say that this mostly happened on the Republican side of things, they could say anything without it being any problem. In the Clinton era they called him out on "anything and everything" they could, sure he did some bad things, but they turned every stone to make him look as bad as possible, a lot of which made no sense.

Bush on the other hand, got nearly none of that, Bush actually did criminal things, really bad things, he actually lied multiple times, really obviously. But he barely got any slaps in the face for it.

Back to Obama, wham, same system as with Clinton. Every stone is turned over to make him seem like some kind of demon. At the frontline of this are people like Rush Limbaugh, who has called Obama so many names, it's just a miracle that he's still around. (Remember how in the Bush era, all republicans shouted death and murder when someone criticised the president, because well, we need to support the American leader... Where did that go?)

This is not an irregular incident, the republican party has gotten angrier, more stupid and even violent in their anti-democrat ways.

So the republicans, anti government, pro company bastards vs the other side.

And sadly enough, the other side is mostly cowards. Where the Republicans are the party of no, when they stand for something, they throw everything in the fight to get it done, no matter how evil or horrible it may be.

The democrats have never seemed to posses that kind of spirit, compromise is the name of the game, and it's a bit of a sad game, because it means that most of their ideas only partially have the benefit that it intended to have in the first place. When they get challenged, they tend to mumble and shut up, or try to reason and compromise.
The problem is, if the guys you're trying to compromise with, are a bunch of assholes, well. It's like trying to compromise with the bully. You promise him some of the money you have, just so you can keep the rest and still buy half a lunch. Problem is, the bully might just try and steal the rest as well.

Alright, sleepy time, those are my two cents, cut off abrubtly there. I do still hope the democrats win though, because if the republicans win, it's going to end up being bad for America, which in turn will eventually be bad for the rest of the world as well.

My computer went poof [Jul. 10th, 2010|11:35 pm]
And with it, multiple posts for my website: www.sciencedraak.com

I'm on my dads lappy right now, to post this message. Untill I manage to get a replacement computer, I'll be stuck with well... Mostly nothing.

My computer had a problem like one year back, where it would show up glitches in the screen. It turned out to be the video card, and miraculously, baking it in the oven saved it.

This time though, baking didn't help at all, and it is now beyond repair :( (Unless I want to throw some serious money at it, and I won't)

So yes, I shall be away for a while.

Trip to our sea dam, and BEYOND! [Jul. 8th, 2010|09:56 pm]

Roughly half of the Netherlands is bellow sea level. The country is sporting long, high and strong sea dams around it's north and west borders, which keep the water out, making sure millions of people can live without fear of drowning. We Dutch are good with water, having learned to fight and win from it since about 1000 years ago.
This hasn't always gone as planned, and there have been a couple of dam breaks which flooded large parts of the country before they could be repaired and the water flow stopped.

I'm a scout leader, and every Saturday, me and three other leaders look after a group of about 9 - 10 girl scouts. We take them on trips, make sure they know how to handle their pocket knives, fires and teach them to care for nature in general.

Click on the picture to see a larger version.

Last Saturday, we visited one of these sea dams with the girls and we spent most of the afternoon walking around, looking at the plants, soil, animals and the area in general. The air was refreshing, fresh with a hint of the sea to it.

For more pictures of the area, check out the photo album, there aren’t a lot, but I hope it’s still interesting!

Heavily disappointed [Apr. 20th, 2010|10:34 pm]

I’m heavily disappointed with the Starcraft 2 beta so far. It is in my view nothing like the exciting game that they presented it as about a year ago. It has changed and become nearly an exact copy of the first.

All general functions are the same, you’re dealing with some different units, yes, but the game play is exactly like Starcraft 1.

And that is one of the things I was hoping to avoid a little. I was hoping resources wouldn’t be just as boring again, that vespienne gas wouldn’t be the same old bullshit. I was hoping it would be a game focused on larger armies. But right now, I’m disappointed in every aspect.

You’re able to hold a lot of units in a single group but it’s pretty much a useless feature with a psy limit of 200.

So yeah, disappointed, and that is why I’m not really playing the multiplayer beta. I do hope the single player campaign and modding community will turn this around though.

An update. [Feb. 25th, 2010|09:32 pm]

A new article has appeared. Quickly, capture it before it’s too late.

But in all seriousness, I’m reviewing and responding to a dutch book I found in the library. Called “Degeneration, the end of evolutionary theory”. The book is quite crappy but the review I hope, is enjoyable.

Find it at www.utopiandragons.com

First real post. [Feb. 1st, 2010|07:04 pm]

So, my first real post on my science blog is up. You can all oooh and aah at it over here:  http://www.utopiandragons.com/?p=33

It’s a question that focusses on a problem often encountered in the creation vs evolution debate.

Many a creationist (and ignorant people in general) tend to think of theory as a word that only describes a guess.
The scientific interpretation though, puts a theory pretty much as the highest level of proofing.

One cannot prove a hypothesis, an idea or/and an explanation in science, but one can get get so much evidence, that the chance of a hypothesis, idea or explanation being refuted, becomes really really small.

This little article explains the difference in use.

Enjoy :)

Critique is welcome, advice even more so :)

Working on a new blog. [Jan. 18th, 2010|11:26 am]

On my server, I’ll reveal it when it’s done.

Basically, this blog/journal here is for private use. The other is for more public, and at the same time more technical/sciencey stuff.

The day is not over yet [Jan. 16th, 2010|11:17 pm]

And thus I still have time to write. I was planning on doing a little bit of storey in support of it being “dragon day”.

But I’m tired, I’ve been spending most of my day, helping my brother out with his apartment and it has drained a lot of my energy XD

So yes, only a short post, still keeping up the “1 post a day at least” idea though.
